Cs 137 Gamma Spectrum This spectrum was taken from a 1 µC 137Cs check source, using a GS-1100-PRO with a new 2 x 2" Gammaspectacular detector and PRA software. The 32 KeV x-ray peak and the 662 keV gamma peak are very obvious, and as there is a good spread between the peaks, this source makes for a good calibration source.

Originally, 28,000 curies were identified as being needed to provide the 120 thermal watts of energy for the cesium generator. As described in the first quarterly

Radionuclides produced by neutron activation such as the gamma emitter Co-60 and Fe-55. • A somewhat different exampl e: There is often a usable ratio between the gamma emitter Am-241 and Pu-239. Graph 2 shows a Cesium 137 gamma-ray spectrum using Nal (Tl) detector and a multichannel analyser. The readings of More than 450 channels had been collected as it is more convinance with the MCA to take multiple readings in such a short time, unlike SCA. There are a few significant peaks that are of interest in this study. Caesium 137 A legacy of atmospheric nuclear bomb tests and accidents. Caesium 137 is a radioactive element with a relatively long half-life of 30.15 years. This particular isotope of caesium is both a beta and gamma emitter.

137 Cs would release, on the average, an initial 2000 photoelectrons (3 x 662) Variation of this value occurs when Poisson distribution is applied √2000 = +/- 45 photoelectron or 2.3%; Hence to determine energy resolution one must look first at the photopeak. The point at which ½ maximum of the amplitude of the peak is considered energy
